Nevertheless, Varane understands why Zidane would be keen on the job.
Raphael Varane has welcomed the possibility of Zinedine Zidane, his head coach at Real Madrid, taking charge of the French national team.
There have been reports circulating that Zidane could replace Didier Deschampsas Les Bleus boss, despite the fact that the former Marseille coach’s contract with France runs until December 31, 2022.
“It’s a possibility. For any French coach, the France national team is a goal,” Varane said in an interview with Europe 1.
“It is natural for him to [want] this position, but it is not relevant right now. Our coach [Deschamps] is doing a good job and we must focus on our short-term objectives: qualification for the World Cup and then the European Championship.”
One player who is adored by Zidane but less so by Deschamps is Karim Benzema, who remains ostracised from the France squad due to the Mathieu Valbuena incident in 2015.
“It’s true that I have a relationship with all the people affected by this issue, but my position is simple: I step aside, it’s not up to me to speak, it’s not my role,” Varane said.
“I get on well with my coaches and my teammates, that’s the most important thing.”
Benzema has hit a rich vein of form for Real Madrid, having scored eight goals in his last six games, and Varane was full of praise for him.
“He’s a hard worker and he’s still progressing,” the centre-back recognised.
“He’s physically well, playing his best football. He’s an efficient and elegant player on the pitch; it’s a pleasure to watch him play.”
Kylian Mbappe is Varane‘s international teammate, yet many in the Spanish capital hope that they will end up being teammates at club level too. When asked about the Paris Saint-Germainforward, the defender had kind words to say.
“He’s still young, but he’s already progressed enormously and he continues to evolve,” Varane said.
“He’s becoming more and more complete and he’s still a goalscorer; he’s one of the greats.
“I aspire to play with the best players and Kylian is one of the best players in Europe
Neymar next line for new PSG deal
Neymar will be the next Paris Saint-Germain player to put pen to paper on a new deal with the French side, who have already announced the contract renewals of Angel Di Maria and Juan Bernat.
Just over a year ago, the Brazil international had put pressure on PSG to negotiate a potential move to Barcelona but talks between the two clubs did not bear fruit.
Neymar seems to finally have adapted to life with the reigning Ligue 1 champions, with whom he reached the Champions League final against Bayern Munich last season.
His current deal runs until 2022 and talks with PSG over a renewal kickstarted several months ago, with the two parties taking an agreement for granted.
However, neither PSG nor Neymar are willing to openly talk about the deal until it is finalised and made official, but everything indicates that this will not take long.
The Brazilian forward returned to action against Lyon at the weekend after being sidelined for more than a month due to injury.
Now, PSG‘s objective is to knock out Bayern Munich from the Champions League, with the first leg of their quarter-final tie being scheduled for April 7.
The next and more complicated target for the club is to renew Kylian Mbappe‘s contract, one which comes to an end in 2022.
“[Mbappe’s] latest performances have been incredible,” said PSG‘s sporting director Leonardo after Mbappe scored two goals in the team’s 4-2 victory against Lyon on Sunday.
“It is not the day to talk about his contract, but there will come a point where we will have a clearer [picture about his] future. In general, the players want to stay at PSG.”
