OXYGEN

OXYGEN
    Oxygen is the gas form 21% by volume of air that we breath.
    ✓oxygen found in other compounds such as water.
     ✓oxygen used in chemical processes such as rusting oxidation and combustion or burning

       LABORATORY PREPARATION OF OXYGEN
there are three common methods of preparation of oxygen in the laboratory which are;

  1. Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
  2. Eating of potassium chlorate in presence of catalyst
  3. Heating compounds rich in oxygen
DECOMPOSITION OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
composition of hydrogen peroxide is the muscle which is highly preferred in the preparation of oxygen in the laboratory
  ✓DECOMPOSITION, is the breaking down of Large chemical compounds to form small chemical compounds
  ✓ CATALYST, is a chemical substance which change or alter rate of chemical reaction but itself remained unchanged at the end of rereaction

DECOMPOSITION OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to form water and oxygen
       H2O > H2O + 02
it is possible to collect oxygen by downward displacement of water because it is only slightly soluble in water.

PROPERTIES OF OXYGEN
Properties of oxygen can be physical or chemical as follows;

Physical properties of oxygen

  1. Oxygen is colorless testless and odourless.
  2. It is slightly soluble in water
  3. It is about t 1.1 times denser than air
  4. It boils at  -183°C.
  5. It freezes at -218°C.
Chemical properties off oxygen

  1. It supports combustion
  2. It is a very strong oxidizing agent
  3. It reacts with metals to form basic oxides
  4. It reacts with non-metal form acidic oxides.

CHEMICAL TEST FOR OXYGEN
a glowing wooden splint lowered into a gas jar of oxygen lights up. This is the test for the presence of oxygen.

INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURE OF OXYGEN
Most method used for manufacture of oxygen in the industry is fractional distillation of liquefied air

FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION
Liquification of air;
  for the first time in manufacturing of oxygen air liquified and then filtered to remove dusty and then cooled to -200 °C.

     As air liquified;
  1. Water vapour condenses and removed using special filter
  2. Carbon dioxide freeze at -79°C and is removed
  3. Oxygen liquify at -183°C.
  4. Nitrogen liquefy at -196°C.
USES OF OXYGEN
  1. oxygen used by living organism for breathing and respiration
  2. Oxygen used in incubator for premature babies
  3. Oxygen used as oxidizer for rocket fuels.
  4. Oxygen used in manufacture of steel from iron
  5. Oxygen used in metal cutting.
